In today’s fast moving world,
it is often not practical for someone to attend a course which has fixed times and
runs at the pace of the slowest learner. We should have the freedom to study at
whatever time suits us and to progress at our own rate.
Using the power of the Internet, this is what the You-learn system offers.
The You-learn system comprises two components,
Content Provision and Content Consumption. Content Provision is the creation of learning material
and is provided by Content Providers ("Teachers"). Content Consumption (learning) is achieved when learners
consume the learning material which has been provided by the Content Providers.
Content
Content is the information which makes up the subject and consists
of any number of questions and their answers. Each set of question and answer is called a Knowledge Byte.
Subjects can be configured as information delivery systems or as
learning systems. An information delivery system presents the information to the user, one
Knowledge Byte at a time, without testing the user on the subject, the learning system periodically tests the user
at regular intervals during the learning process.
Each of the systems keeps a full record of when the users have
received the Knowledge Bytes as well as their answers to those questions asked of them.
Content Providers
Content providers (“Teachers”) are those organisations
or people who create the learning material that the learners use on the You-learn system.
Content (Learning material) can either be created as “Private” or “Public”.
Private content is available only to those users who
are registered in the same organisation or company as the Content Provider,
and then, only if given permission by the Content Provider to view the content.
This means that different content can be made available to different groups within the organisation.
A training course on Digital Filing might be made available only to the administrative staff of
a company while a course on company policy might be made available to the entire staff.
Public content is that training material that the Content Provider wants to make available
to anyone through the You-learn system. A “Public” training course on “VAT as it applies
to the sale and purchase of fixed property” might be of interest to all estate agents.
Content Consumers (Learners)
Content Consumers (Learners) are made up of two groups,
Private learners and Public learners.
Private learners are users registered to a Content Provider who are given access to various subjects by that
content provider. Public learners are those users who select to consume one or more of the subjects available
through the You-learn website. To view a list of available subjects, click on the "Select subjects" button above.
Using the system
After you have registered for a subject, the system will
send you an e-mail with your username and password which you will use to log on to the You-learn system.
If you are registered for more than one category,
you will be able to select which category you would like to receive your next Byte sized chunk of information.
This will be in the form of a question with its answer.
After every three Byte sized chunks that you are given,
the system will send you a question from one of the learning Bytes that you have already been given.
You will be required to answer this question and the system will mark your answer.
When you have completed the subject
(received all of the Byte sized chunks of information), the system will send you an e-mail confirming your achievement.
